Half Term Activities from Home with a Toddler and Young Child

Entertaining little ones during half term doesn’t mean you have to leave the house. There are plenty of fun and engaging activities you can enjoy from the comfort of your home, especially when the weather isn't on your side.

1. Build a Den
Turn your living room into a magical hideaway by building a den. Use blankets, cushions, and furniture to create a cosy little space where your toddler and young child can play, read, or enjoy a snack. You could even add fairy lights or torches for a magical touch.

2. Create a Sensory Play Station
Sensory play is a great way to keep toddlers and young children entertained while encouraging their development. You can set up a simple sensory station with items from around the house – think rice or pasta in a tray, bubbles, or even homemade playdough. Let them explore different textures, colours, and shapes.

3. Host an Indoor Treasure Hunt
Give your children a sense of adventure by organising an indoor treasure hunt. Hide small toys or treats around the house, and create clues to lead them to each one. You could even theme it – perhaps hunting for autumn leaves or animals – to tie in with the season.

4. Toddler-Friendly Cooking
Let your little one get involved in the kitchen by preparing simple, toddler-friendly recipes. Activities like decorating biscuits, assembling sandwiches, or making fruit kebabs are easy and fun. This also helps them practise their motor skills and enjoy a sense of accomplishment when they see (and eat!) what they've made.

5. Have a Dance Party
When in doubt, put on some music and have a dance party! Toddlers love to move, and dancing together is a fun way to burn off energy. You can create a playlist of your child's favourite songs, or pick a few upbeat tunes that everyone can enjoy. If you're feeling creative, throw in some musical instruments like tambourines or maracas.

Half term at home can be just as exciting as going out. These simple activities provide hours of fun while keeping your little ones engaged, without needing to leave the house.
